Workplace Discrimination
In order to know what to do about workplace discrimination, you must first understand what it is. Workplace discrimination occurs when an employee is treated unfairly because of his or her race, gender, age, nationality, or other legally protected characteristic. Discrimination also occurs if an employee is treated unfairly or reprimanded because he or she made a complaint for or reported an instance of discrimination.
Workplace discrimination can be difficult to prove because it is so subjective. It has to be shown that the unfair treatment was due to race, gender, etc., as opposed to poor work performance. An employee who is subject to discrimination may be entitled to receive compensation for a number of things, including:
Lost wages
Pain and suffering
Reinstatement (if the employee was fired)
Punitive damages (damages awarded in order to punish the offending party)
There is a statute of limitations in discrimination cases. That means that you have a certain amount of time after the incident in order to pursue legal options. In most states that statute of limitations is 180 days.
If you believe you have been a victim of workplace discrimination, immediately file a report and talk to your employer about it. If your employer does not seem to take adequate action, then consult an attorney as soon as possible.

Consumer Fraud
We hear stories of people being taken advantage of through consumer fraud every year. There are countless scams that thieves use in order to cheat thousands of people out of their hard earned cash. With increasing dependence on the Internet and technology, scam artists do not even have to meet you in order to scam you. We all receive countless spam e-mails every day from people claiming to be able to send us millions of dollars, of course, we have to send them a check for processing fees first. These sorts of scams are increasing in popularity, and it is very important that you know what your rights are, and how to protect yourself against consumer fraud.
There are certain steps you can take to avoid becoming a victim of consumer fraud. One is to be informed. Keep yourself aware of the new scams that con artists are using. A knowledgeable consumer is harder to trick. Also, be very careful when using the internet; be sure to protect all of your personal information that is stored on your computer.
If you receive an e-mail from someone you don't know, who is asking for your personal information, delete the e-mail immediately. Even if the e-mail looks real, and has a logo on it from, for example, your bank, do not give out any information. If you are unsure whether or not the e-mail is legitimate, simply call the business and inquire first. It is very, very rare for businesses to contact you via e-mail and ask for your personal information, and more often than not it is a scam. Taking five minutes to call and double-check that the e-mail is valid could save you from years of headaches.
There are numerous laws in every state that serve to protect the victims of consumer fraud, and you may be entitled to compensation if you have been the victim of consumer fraud.
If you or a loved one has been the victim of consumer fraud in Flint, Saginaw, Lansing or Traverse City, Michigan, please contact the experienced attorneys at Jay Trucks & Associates, PC today.
