Insurance Company Charges Michigan Woman a 600 Percent Surcharge

We pay for insurance policies under the assumption that these policies will be there when we need them. Unfortunately, some insurance companies delay paying your claims in a timely manner or punish you for filing a claim in the first place.

In Michigan, an 83-year-old woman has been threatened with a 600 percent surcharge on her homeowner's insurance, which would raise her bill from $585 to $4,092, according to an article in the Lansing State Journal.

The surcharge comes after two claims: In 2009, a pot left on a burner caused $2,864 worth of smoke damage to the woman's home. In May, 2011, a clogged drain in the woman's basement caused $585 worth of water damage.

The woman received two letters from the insurance company, one suggesting she look for coverage elsewhere, the other stating the damage was a result of her actions and indicative of future behavior.

After an unexpected life event – such as a personal injury, property damage, or a car accident – we are often at the mercy of our insurers. Catastrophic events are usually sudden and unanticipated, and in that moment you depend on your insurance policy to help pay for accident-related expenses.

At Jay Trucks & Associates, our Michigan attorneys fight for people who are being treated unfairly by their own insurance companies. We have the experience to confront insurance companies and work toward fair compensation for your claim. Please contact us to schedule a free consultation.
